History
Dane and Travis Boersma, brothers of Dutch descent, founded Dutch Bros on February 12, 1992, in Grants Pass, Oregon. The brothers wanted to start a new business because their family’s third-generation dairy farm was struggling due to changes in environmental regulations. Travis Boersma suggested they set up a coffee cart and sell espresso. Dane Boersma was able to contribute money he had saved while running a Dairy Queen franchise. They began with a $12,000 investment in an espresso machine and a single cart, which they placed in downtown Grants Pass. The name Dutch Bros was inspired by their immigrant grandparents.
They quickly added four more cars and, by 1994, had opened their first drive-thru location. The company started roasting its own coffee in 1996, sourcing beans from El Salvador, Colombia, and Brazil. Dane and Travis Boersma struck a deal with a customer, Marty McKenna, in 1994, allowing him to open his own Dutch Bros in Medford, about 30 miles from Grants Pass. McKenna’s first stand was so successful that he quickly opened a second across town. Boersmas hired McKenna as a partner in 1997, hoping he would help expand the Medford operation. They bought McKenna’s stake in the company two years later.
Did You Know?
Most restaurants now appear to have a hidden menu of goodies that aren’t on the printed menu. Dutch Bros is no exception. Employees print them, which is the only difference. They simply do not make them available to the public. Corporate approves printouts of the “secret” menu items, and decoding them requires corporate printouts. Their rumored secret drinks menu includes fourteen items.
